Grok in a Tesla

Sorted at your desk. Ready in the car.

If your Tesla has Grok, it can use FamRelay by voice. Ask for the details you sent from the assistant you use at home. Or share something while you drive, with your other assistants or with your family.

Set it up We use this in our own car. Setup took about a minute on a phone.

How it looks

One assistant has your flight. Now your car does too.

The assistant in your car is a different product from the one you plan with, so it starts out knowing none of it. FamRelay carries across the few details you approve. Nothing else from the conversation goes with them.

Send my flight details to my other assistants.
Here’s what I’d send:
  • Flight 482
  • Friday
  • Departs 4:15 PM
  • Terminal B
  • Lands 6:40 PM
Not shared: the fare and payment details It ends when you land. Send it?
Yes, send it

In between

FamRelayHolds only what you approved
  • Five details, encrypted. Not the conversation they came from.
  • Readable by the assistants signed in as you, and nobody else.
  • Gone after the end date you agreed to.
  • Approved by you
  • Ends Friday evening

In the car

What time is my flight on Friday?
I checked FamRelay. Flight 482 leaves at 4:15 PM from Terminal B and lands at 6:40 PM.
Which terminal was that?
Terminal B.

Illustrative, with fictional details. Your assistants’ exact wording will differ.

Just ask the question. In our use, Grok checks FamRelay by itself when you ask something it might hold the answer to, so you don’t have to mention it. If it doesn’t, say “check FamRelay”. It won’t announce a new item when you get in: FamRelay doesn’t send notifications yet.

Share while you drive

Remembered it on the road? Say it once.

It works the other way too. Tell Grok what to pass on and who it’s for: your other assistants, or someone in your FamRelay contacts. By the time you’re home, it’s already where it needs to be.

  • Grok reads back exactly what it would send, and to whom.
  • Nothing is sent until you say yes. Saying no is just as easy.
  • No screen to tap. The whole thing is spoken.

We’ve shared an appointment from the car to our own other assistants this way. Sharing with a person uses the same two steps, and is easiest when they’re already saved as a contact.

Let my other assistants know I’m seeing the accountant on Tuesday at 3.
I’d send your other assistants: Accountant appointment, Tuesday, 3:00 PM. It would end on Tuesday evening. Shall I send it?
Yes, send it.
Sent. Your other assistants can read it now.
And remind Sam that Max needs to go to the dentist next Thursday.
I’d send Sam: Max, dentist, next Thursday, until the end of that day. Send it?

Before you start

Three things you’ll need.

A Tesla with Grok

Not every Tesla has it. It depends on the car’s hardware, software version, region and connection. Tesla’s Grok page lists what’s needed.

Your Grok account, in the car

The car must be signed in to the same Grok account you use on your phone. A connector you add in the Grok app is then available in the car as well.

A Google account

You sign in to FamRelay with Google. Connect the assistant you use at home with the same account, and your assistants can pass details between them. The setup guide covers each one.

Set it up

A minute on your phone, before you drive.

You add FamRelay once, in the Grok app. That makes it available in Grok on your phone and in the car. Nothing is installed in the car, and there’s no FamRelay screen to open on the road.

Already use FamRelay with one assistant? Start at step 1 and sign in with the Google account you already use.
  1. Step 1 · Add FamRelay to Grok

    Give Grok FamRelay’s address.

In the Grok app on your phone, open Settings, then Connectors. Choose Custom connector and paste in this address.

    https://api.famrelay.ai/mcp

On a computer, the same thing is at grok.com/connectors. Menu names move around as Grok updates.

  2. Step 2 · Sign in

Use the same Google account as your other assistants.

When Grok opens the FamRelay page, choose Continue with Google, check the email it shows, then choose Allow. The Google account is what ties your assistants together, so it has to match.

If Grok asks for an API key instead, create an access key at api.famrelay.ai/account and paste it into the key box, never into the chat.

  3. Step 3 · Send something from home

Ask your other assistant to pass it on.

In the assistant that has the details, ask it to send them to your other assistants. It shows you exactly what it would send and until when. Nothing leaves until you say yes.

Send my flight details to my other assistants, until I land.
Here’s what I’d send: Flight 482, Friday, departs 4:15 PM from Terminal B, lands 6:40 PM. Access ends Friday evening. Send it?
  4. Step 4 · Ask in the car

Start Grok and ask, or share.

Start Grok the way you usually do in the car and ask your question. In our use it checks FamRelay without being told. If it doesn’t, mention FamRelay by name. To share, say what to pass on and who it’s for.

Good to know

What to expect, including the limits.

We use this ourselves, in one car. Here’s what we can and can’t promise.

Your car

Will it work in my Tesla?

We can’t say for every car. Grok in the car, and its use of connectors, are Tesla and xAI features. Whether you have them depends on your car, its software, your region and your Grok plan, and they can change. FamRelay’s side is the same in any assistant that can add a connector.

Asking

Will Grok tell me when something arrives?

No. FamRelay doesn’t send notifications yet. Grok looks when you ask it something: in our use it checks FamRelay without being told, but that’s Grok’s choice each time, so name FamRelay if an answer seems to be missing.

Out loud

Who hears it?

Everyone in the car. Grok reads the details aloud, so send yourself only what you’re happy for passengers to hear. What Grok does with the details once it has read them is covered by xAI’s and Tesla’s terms, not ours.

Your assistants

Can I send something to the car only?

Not yet. An item you send yourself can be read by every assistant connected to your FamRelay account, not just Grok.

Other people

Can Grok read what my family shared with me?

Yes. Ask “What’s been shared with me on FamRelay?” and it reads those too, with who each one is from. As with any share, the sender can see when it was read.

Sending

Can I share something from the car?

Yes, by voice. Grok reads back what it would send and to whom, and sends only after you say yes. Listen to the read-back before you answer: a misheard name or time is easier to catch then than to correct later. If it’s wrong, say so, or tell it not to send.

Limits

What can I send, and for how long?

The usual FamRelay limits apply: a title, up to 20 short details and a note, kept for at most 90 days. Passwords, access codes and card numbers are refused. How FamRelay behaves today.

Keep your eyes on the road. Set this up while parked, and use only your voice while driving. FamRelay is independent: it isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Tesla or xAI, and Tesla and Grok are trademarks of their owners.
